General Context

In the last years, alcohol related trauma has motivated a growing concern to rise in the media worldwide.

Episodic heavy drinking among the youth provokes  a wrong choice-making behaviour that leads to trauma with fatal results in many cases. Every summer there are reports about tourist’s deaths and injuries due to this alcohol related to these circumstances.

University Hospital Son Espases as leading trauma center in Balearic Islands is the main hospital in attention and management of this alcohol related traumas in touristic population as Balearic Islands receives each year around 15 million of European tourists each year. That makes our hospital to attend more than 250 severe traumas every year, much of them related to this phenomenon.

Target

This project aims to study and determine the alcohol-related trauma in summer destinations along the Mediterranean coast.

Our intention is being able to connect the dots followed by the young European tourists going on 3'S holidays (Sun, Sand, Sex), which always involves heavy drinking as main ingredient, that suffer an alcohol-related major trauma.

That means getting to know their reasons in order to be able to stablish preventive measures in their countries of origin and at their destiny as well. We want to know to which kind of trauma are more frequent after alcohol consumption so we can be able to improve our care to these patients and to prevent it from happening. Moreover will try to know more about how is the come back to normal life into their countries after suffering alcohol-related major trauma, so we can start actions to improve their integration and quality of life.
