H2020. Turkey

Title: Improving the sorting, separation and recycling o composite and multi-layer materials.

Description of the Project:

A Turkish university is looking to incorporate different profiles into the proposal it is preparing for the topic CE-SC5-24-2020 Improving the sorting, separation and recycling or composite and multi-layer materials.

Specifically, the profiles are as follows:

Partner #1 (A research institute or SME for machinery and robotics)

Partner #1 will be responsible for the design of the machinery to disassemble RO membrane modules and sort into individual components. Spiral wound reverse osmosis modules will be cut and disassembled using a specially developed autonomous cutting machine along with sorting of cut materials into individual components for efficient mass processing. The multilayered membrane sheets must be shredded carefully to a specific size.

Partner #2 (Environmental Engineering company or program)

Partner 2 will be responsible for the pilot scale, cost-effective cleaning of module components prepared by Partner 1. Shredded membrane materials and other sorted materials should be washed and cleaned from impurities. An universal cleaning method should be developed for waste membrane modules collected from all over the world. The wastewater generated in this process must also be recovered and managed environmentally friendly.

Partner #3 (Membrane and module manufacturer)

Partner 3 will be responsible for the evaluation of the reusability of individually recovered module components and materials, not only ABS, PP and PET but also recovered, high purity PSf. If necessary, Partner 3 can work with its own suppliers for module components.

Partner #4 (Thermoplastic compounding research institute or company)

Partner 4 will be responsible for the evaluation of the use of recovered PSf in alternative applications including automotive, electrical and machinery.

 Partner #5 (Composite research institute)

Partner 5 will be responsible for the shredding of glass-fiber reinforced thermoset epoxy outer shell of waste modules and their reuse as fillers in commodity plastics. In addition, Partner 5 will be responsible for the re-design and development of a recyclable outer shell for future membrane modules that can operate under high pressure (up to 70 bar).

 Partner #6 (Institute or Company)

Partner 6 will be responsible for the life cycle assessment and cost analysis of the whole process carefully to reveal the environmental and economic impact of the project.
